The battery alone also obviously cannot provide the full power either. What this means is that even though you are 'plugged in', potentially it will also draw power from the battery, and then top up the battery when available. The 'balance' of the power is then drawn from the battery. The power supplies (ie the power bricks) often cannot supply the full power that the CPU/GPU etc can draw. Now, on the Dell front, you need to consider that a number of their laptops use hybrid power. It will significantly prolong the number of charges vs charging to 100% and draining to 0%. The general consensus for maximising battery life when being used is to keep it between 40% and 80% charge. Pulled the battery out and just used the power brick. To maximise lithium-ion batteries life, you would pull it out and store it at 40% in a low temperature environment.
